Please reach us at if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We are one and the same! While we have operated since our beginning as a Davis and Elkins College student organization under the name "SPEC Squared", we are developing into a student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
Absolutely!! We currently work with several educators in Randolph County, visiting their classrooms about once a semester to present for their students. If you would like to learn more about our chemistry demonstrations, please send us a message. We are more than happy to give an age-appropriate (grade is taken into account when designing) presentation in your classroom- for free!
We would love to have you! Members of SPECC are required to have either a major or minor degree in chemistry (and also they must either be currently enrolled in or already have taken Introduction to Chemistry 1). However, we can make exceptions if they have taken at least one chemistry course while at D&E and have a special love for the subject (but may not have had time for more courses). Members must also retain membership status with ACS after their sophomore year. If you are interested in joining our diverse group of STEM enthusiasts, don't hesitate to send us a message!
As an organization of STEM students, we understand how time-consuming academics and athletics can be. Therefore, we do not mandate the number of meetings that members have to attend or volunteer activities that they have to assist with to retain their status with us. Instead, we have two "categories" of members! If you periodically volunteer with us, assist with two presentations a semester, and maintain ACS membership, you are considered an "Active Member" and upon graduation will be presented with chords and a white coat at the Annual Coating Ceremony in April. Active Members are also eligible to attend field trips that are paid at the expense of the club. If you enjoy coming here and there to events but don't want to assist with demonstrations and volunteer work- no worries! "Inactive Members" are still welcome to attend semesterly parties- they just don't receive a white coat or the other above-mentioned benefits.
